- He was captured at the Battle of Neville’s Cross in 1346 and ransomed in 1357.
- Scotland stuggled to pay the ransom.
- He first married Joan of the Tower, daughter of Edward II, who died in 1362.
- He married Margaret Drummond in 1364 and sought an annulment in 1370, although Urban V reversed it.
- He sought to marry Agnes Dunbar, but was frustrated by the Papal intervention and died the following year.
- He was childless by both wives and his mistresses, thus Robert II succeeded him.
