The story of Dover Castle….

When a land bridge connected us to the rest of the continent of Europe, the area that became Dover wasn’t of any particular importance but once the land bridge disappeared the white cliffs at Dover became the point on our coastline that is closest to France. July 2022 saw the port of Dover becoming the scene of huge queues of traffic.

Its situation meant that it was an Iron Age settlement and was where the Romans invaded and set up their first fort. Then the Anglo-Saxons took over, and finally the fort became a medieval castle that still presides over the cliff tops. The castle has a rich history, and if you go to this article you can read about it.

  1. Thank you including the article link. It was only yesterday that I learned of the land bridge that once connected England with Europe. (Which just goes to show the depth of my ignorance.)

  2. Dover Castle is a fascinating place, with layer upon layer of history around you. My family and I had the opportunity to stay in one of the holiday lets on site – the Sergeant-Major’s House – in 2013. It’s a unique experience being free to wander the castle grounds before and after all the tourists have gone. Highly recommended!
