More historic walks on Channel Five

If it isn’t Rob Bell walking Britain’s Lost Battlefields or Railways, Dan Jones walking Britain’s Roman Roads, Suzannah Lipscomb walking “Tudor” England or Onyeka Nubia walking Victorian Britain, it is Arthur Williams (the former marine and pilot) walking Wartime Britain. This is a fascinating series in its own right, showing how areas of the country responded to the demands of the Second World War – the Blitz, blackouts, armaments factories, mines and barrage balloons. There are six episodes, each an hour long, although three of them were shown earlier in truncated form.

For those of us who prefer documentaries with a mediaeval connection, episode five (East Anglia) has an interesting twist. The ruins of the original Leiston Abbey were used to hide a pill box that was, of course, integral to defending the north Suffolk coast in case of an invasion. Williams, who comes from Worcestershire and has the intriguing middle name Vaughan, has a natural feel for his subject.
