While searching around for an illustration of an English cherry tree in blossom in the late 14th century, I happened upon this link which opens with “….Lavishly illustrated manuscripts known as the Tacuinum Sanitatis were first commissioned by northern Italian nobility during the last decades of the 14th century….”
So I looked further, and found http://www.godecookery.com/tacuin/tacuin.htm which reveals most of the wonderful illustrations from the Tacuinum Sanitatis. They show the harvesting of various herbs, vegetables and tree fruit, and are truly beautiful. There are also scenes of hunting, crushing nuts to make oil and so on. Not all apply to Britain, of course, but some certainly do. And many would have been served here.
This magnificent collection of illustrated manuscripts is well worth close examination. The boar was too good to omit!
