Monarchs whose children died first….

Richard III – from https://le.ac.uk/richard-iii

Well, here’s British Kings And Queens Who Outlived Their Children (grunge.com), a list of English/ British monarchs who outlived their children.

Richard’s there, of course, and reasonably well treated. His is a particularly sad story, losing his only legitimate son, then his wife, then his own life at the hands of traitors when defending his throne. Lady Luck was in a very bad mood during his reign. Given the chance, what might he have achieved? He’d have saved us from the Tudors for starters.

Henry VII aka The Weasel—from Nash Ford Publishing

The Weasel features too, of course, because his son and heir Arthur turned up his toes before his dear old Dad. Unfortunately the Weasel didn’t outlive Fat Henry too! So we had that gross so-and-so inflicted upon not only our history but the unfortunate women of his reign in particular! Oh, and there’s no mention that on the death of Prince Arthur the disgusting old Weasel considered marrying the young widow Catherine of Aragon himself, so he wouldn’t have to hand back any money back to Ferdinand and Isabella! So she ended up with his next son. Which was worse? Neck and neck I’d say. Oh, perhaps in Fat Henry’s case that’s not quite the phrase to choose.

Henry VIII the Uxorious—from redbubble.com

Poor Catherine, two vile blokes and a lousy life in England, which innocent realm she probably loathed as much as its men! Still, at least her head doesn’t feature in the above illustration!

Anyway, read the above article to see other monarchs who lost their offspring before they themselves passed on.

  1. Though Catherine of Aragon probably had Henry VIII at his ‘best’, while he was still young and popular, and not as cruel and suspicious as he became later on. At least at first, before Henry became convinced she would never give him a male heir.

  2. It is so funny for me as a foreigner that the English considered the Tudors their best and their rule “the golden age of England” despite their vile. We had tyrants and psychopaths in our history and nobody is proud of them. Is this because E1 promoted herself too much?
