There are boars….and there are shiny boars….!

Some manmade boars are downright ugly, but some are really handsome. My daughter spotted this splendid fellow at the Blue Diamond Garden Centre in Nailsworth, Glos. A fine addition to any Ricardian’s garden! £399 and he’s yours.

There he was, posing at the front with all his companions. Unfortunately my daughter didn’t have a spare £399 to splash out. All I hope is that he goes to an appreciative home. Preferably a Yorkist home!

Boars aren’t cute and cuddly, of course, as Henry Tudor almost discovered to his cost in 1485. There he was, cowering behind his bodyguard, when Richard III commenced his astonishing last charge. So when you watch the brief video below please imagine that the black boar is white, and that Sir William Stanley (off camera) has sneezed, fallen off his horse, knocked himself out and is hors de combat. It’s every man for himself, and the bodyguard flees. Now the terrified Henry is exposed to the full fury of the oncoming royal boar! Staying to fight was always the last thing on Henry’s mind! Oh, what a different outcome to that battle.

  1. In Texas, we have javelinas which are compact wild boars. I have only ever encountered one in an uncontrolled environment. The little booger jumped out from under a cedar tree. I guess I disturbed his nap. Thankfully, we chose to go our separate ways. Not a confrontation I would care to have.
